The Affordable Care Act (ACA) has changed the market for health insurance for college students dramatically. One of the most popular aspects of the ACA is the provision that requires insurance carriers to allow children to stay on their parents insurance plan until age 26, which means that many more college and grad students now have coverage on their parents’ plan.
However, those ACA plans can be quite expensive, and for many healthy students and recent grads it seems like overkill to pay for such an all-encompassing plan. Also, many colleges no longer offer a lower cost option for their students, as the ACA has effectively put an end to most of those plans.
The best option left for students and recent grads that need to buy their own insurance are so-called short term medical insurance plans, or STM plans. If not on your parents’ plan, either because they don’t have one, it’s too expensive, or the timing is off, then a short term medical plan makes a lot of sense. There are many STM plans available, and we’ve chosen to offer one of the best. Although not designed for long-time coverage longer than a year, STM plans are also good while waiting for your employer’s coverage to begin or while looking for a job, and you can extend them beyond a year if necessary. Here’s a short summary of what our STM plan offers:
